"Let's Get Some Real Rivalry Back in Golf" by Fred Corcoran, February, 1971
Looking Back Vol. 6
Following are the final “Looking Back” scans from the “1971 Annual” issue of Golf Digest. We begin with the above titled piece by the “Father of the PGA Tour” Fred Corcoran. Running in parallel below the Corcoran piece is a graphical pictorial of the key moments from the 1970 PGA Tour. A fun read. too.
So, let’s get started!
Something else I found interesting in the issue was this page listing the 1970 Amateur Rankings plus the Top 10 Amateurs from previous years going all the way back to 1955. Very cool…
And this one for the professionals…
Something else fun from the ‘71 Annual were the following ads. First, on the inside the cover is the one below showing the latest in “high-tech” videography. I need that!
Actually, I began filming my swing in 1970 and still have every video I ever made of my pathetic swing. It started with 8mm cameras and my buddy and I would drop the film off at a camera store, wait a week, receive the film, and watch our swings on a reel-to-reel projector just like the one in the ad below (Yes, I’m nuts.)
How about this one for Kenneth Smith custom clubs. They were way ahead of the times. Did you ever own a set of Kenneth Smiths? (Yes, I did.) I know, you’re surprised…
On a final note, in response to my recent post of that great speech “The Best of Times” by George Peper, I received the following fun message from subscriber Gary Slatter…
“Thanks, enjoyed playing with George in St Andrews (Thursday Club)!”
How great must that have been! George Peper used to live alongside the 18th fairway of St. Andrews. Imagine the stories he shared with Gary during that round!
See you next weekend for Looking Back Vol. 7.
