“Two-handicappers are a dime a dozen.”
I remember when I read that line fifty-four years ago. I was a relatively new golfer, and certainly not yet a two-handicapper. Far from it. But when I read that line, I said, “I need to make sure I become better than a two-handicapper!”
That line was from the March 1971 issue of Golf Digest. I still have the magazine, and for the majority of my golfing life I have maintained a scratch or better handicap principally because of that article and especially because of that quote. It all started then. I wanted to be better than that description. Here’s the magazine cover…
Here is the swing sequence and interesting piece about the Blonde Bomber Jack DePalo…
Speaking of golf swings, there was another interesting piece in the ‘71 issue of Golf Digest. It was the following full-color spread of that year’s Tour winners to date. No two are alike. There’s a lesson in there, somewhere, I think. What could it possibly be?
Wait…What was it Arnold Palmer said? “Swing your swing.”
On an intriguing final note, check out this ad for golf balls back in 1971…
How’d you like to play one of those! But read it carefully. Faultless was ahead of its time. So was Trevino.
